Networking With Janet Kestin And Nancy Vonk

Nancy Vonk

Nancy Vonk

The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty was discussed repeatedly in high school and university, so when I learned that Ogilvy’s former co-chief creative officers who were responsible for the work were speaking at a Women of Influence event, I couldn’t resist. On Wednesday night, Nancy Vonk and Janet Kestin shared how women can get ahead by speaking up and networking at a Women of Influence event.

In the age of personal branding, I was surprised when they said that women are taught it’s wrong to talk about themselves. Whether it’s at a networking event or an interview, it’s beneficial to have an elevator pitch ready and be a good storyteller when you have the opportunity to talk about your life and career.

Movie Review: Suffragette

Carey Mulligan as Maud in SUFFRAGETTE

Carey Mulligan stars in Suffragette, which tells the story of working class women in London, England in 1912 who are tired of working for sexist bosses for low pay. They want their voices to be heard in the public sphere and they want to create a better future for their daughters.

After Maud (Carey Mulligan) joins the movement by sharing a testimony about her life to a group of men, they ignore the evidence, dismiss Maud’s poor working conditions and refuse to change policies. In fact, they throw Maud and other women in jail for responding negatively to the news. When Maud and her friends become political prisoners, it marks the beginning of their fight and the end of Maud’s marriage.

Wearable technology is no longer an innovation to fantasize about; it’s actively shaping how we interact with brands. Before there was the Apple Watch, Disney invested $1 billion in introducing MagicBands to Walt Disney World guests.

I’m proud to say that I’m still a child at heart and I love all things Disney. I experienced the benefits of the MagicBands technology firsthand on my last trip to Walt Disney World.

Meeting Margaret

Hot On The Street - Margaret Trudeau and Sarah Prince - IMG_8531

After hearing the mental health advocate speak at Western, I was keen to see Margaret Trudeau again at Indigo. Every seat was taken on the first floor at Indigo Manulife and even though she came to promote a self-help book for women, there were quite a few men present.

In her first bestselling book, Changing My Mind, she documented her bouts of depression, but showed no signs of unhappiness last night. Margaret was very giddy on stage, smiling as she spoke about every subject.

Instagram Inspiration: Happy New Year

Many top brands were eager to help consumers ring in the new year. Overall, I noticed that brands posted more GIFs and short videos this year, which signals progress. Last year’s round up included only three posts and this year’s list includes three categories to help marketers with content development on Instagram.

I hope you’ll bookmark this for future reference and maybe even print it in colour to discuss at your next brainstorm meeting!

Inspiration for Small Businesses

While evaluating posts in my feed, I looked for simple posts that small business owners can learn from and treat as templates for future holiday posts. With the right stock photo and some text overlay in a program like Adobe Photoshop, a post that looks like this one from Aroma is fairly easy to create.
