Toys “R” Us Celebrates 30 Years Of Fun

Hot On The Street - Toys R Us 30th Anniversary logo

In case it wasn’t clear when I blogged about going back to Disney World, I’m proud to share that I’m a kid at heart. Toys “R” Us shares that sentiment and wants Canadians to share stories on social media about taking an oath to never grow up.

Where would the retail chain be if parents hit a certain age and decided to abandon their childhood fantasies and stop playing with toys for good?

To celebrate their 30th anniversary, Toys “R” Us is going all out. They’ve partnered with Transat Holidays, AIR MILES®, Lego and Mattel to offer Canadian shoppers major promotions and host exciting events for kids of all ages. Visit www.toysrus.ca/events for more details.

Well Wishes – Cabb (Abigail Breslin & Cassidy Reiff)

Young actress, Abigail Breslin, who’s grown up onscreen since starring in Little Miss Sunshine has embarked on a music career. ‘Well Wishes’ may not be top notch, but Avril Lavigne’s dwindling concert attendance implies teens are looking elsewhere for pop-rock music. Also, kudos to Breslin for delivering content to fans while they await her next theatrical release. Breslin’s foray into music offers something else for teens to watch other than ClevverTV, a scandalous video with Rihanna or an interview with Bieber about his paternity scandal.

Breslin told ELLE Girl that she and her co-singer-songwriter-slash-BFF, Cassidy Reif, seek inspiration for song titles from the names of OPI nail polishes! Incidentally, spending time online shopping can be conducive to not only filling your closet with new finds, but also finding inspiration for your professional endeavours.

Purple Streak

It doesn’t take a large survey of tween girls to realize that feather hair extensions are the latest craze. This new trend is popping up across North America, including in L.A. and Toronto, although very few hairstylists have been trained in Canada to date. Demi Lovato is one of many celebrities sporting the new trend and rocker Steven Tyler is another fan who has been seen wearing them on American Idol. Demand for the feathers remains high as people search online beauty shops and salon owners scramble to find suppliers.

I was able to act as a guinea pig, so to speak, for a local hairstylist just hours after she received her training. I couldn’t test out the blonde/black feather weave that she was wearing, but for the past week I have had a purple/black feather in my hair. I probably wouldn’t be able to find it if she had inserted a solid black feather, so this ‘purple streak’ seemed to be the most suitable option. It doesn’t make nearly as bold of a statement as the skater chicks who eagerly don bright pink streaks in their hair at Avril Lavigne concerts, but it certainly adds a unique touch to my ‘do. Pink hair is trending right now too, by the way.

Unless I put my hair half up or clip some of it back, it’s hard to notice because it blends in with the rest of my dark hair. The same goes for my naturally blonde friend (whom I share initials with), as she was given a light blonde feather extension that blends in with her highlights. The extension is expected to hold for 2-3 weeks, at which point it will simply fall out.

Growing up, I occasionally got a colourful hair wrap while at a theme park or all-over braids at a summer festival, but haven’t done anything like that for several years already. If I were to try out this trend again, I would definitely choose to get multiple extensions scattered throughout my hair so that it’d noticeable and look more playful.

Until posting this online, I’ve remained discreet about the addition to my hair, which has had no chemical treatment or colouring to date, and now I find myself tempted to experiment further. I also recommend it as a birthday party activity idea for girls – just envision how that group shot will look in the end!

Maria Aragon Was Born To Be A Star!

In her interview on Friday with 104.5 CHUM FM’s Joey Brooks, Lady Gaga said that her intent with her latest single, ‘Born This Way’ was to create a song with an “un-apologetically positive and strong and empowering” message.

Each time the station introduces her song now, they refer to her performance on the Grammys, when she emerged onto the stage from an ‘egg’ before launching into a highly choreographed dance.

Lady Gaga always gives something people to talk about, but now that she has broken records for digital downloads, she is making headline news. ‘Born This Way’ is the fastest selling single on iTunes – quite an accomplishment for a 24 year old. Speaking of young talent, Lady Gaga also intends to invite YouTube superstar Maria Aragon to join her on stage at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on March 3rd. I can’t help but think about how Avril Lavigne once joined Shania Twain on stage and look where that punk princess is now…like what the hell! Imagine what the future holds for 10 year old Maria, especially once she has some professional vocal training.
