See New York Through The Friends Virtual Tour

Sarah Prince Friends

Words can’t express how much I miss New York. I wish I could go back to shop, eat and explore. One of my favourite New York memories was going on the Sex and the City Hotspots tour (I swear I didn’t name it myself!) and drinking a Cosmo. When I found out that On Location Tours created a Friends Virtual Tour, I signed up immediately. I’m dying to visit LA, go on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour and sit in Central Perk. I can’t travel right now, so the virtual tour was a great substitute!

For 40 minutes, you can escape to New York while your tour guide Roseanne presents 18 locations featured on Friends. The tour shows you where they worked, dined and lived. That includes the office building where Chandler had his mysterious job and Saks Fifth Avenue where Joey tried to sell perfume. TV characters often can’t afford their apartments, but I rarely think about their weddings. It was funny when Roseanne pointed out that Monica and Chandler probably couldn’t have paid for their wedding in a fancy hotel.

The six of them live in the West Village. That’s near Washington Square Park where Phoebe embarrasses herself running and learns to ride a bike. Seeing the famous Friends apartment building where all of them have lived at some point was the highlight. I’ve had it marked on a Google map for years, but have never been.

It’s cool to learn about how the crew picked the Friends apartment building because of its amazing lighting possibilities. Wait until you realize the show invented balconies that don’t actually exist! Central Perk was based on a café at the bottom. It has red walls and I bet I would love it.

You can also see the building across the street where Ugly Naked Guy and then Ross lived. It was interesting to see Ross’s building because the interior seems so modern on TV, yet the exterior looks so old in real life.

While you virtually travel around New York, you can learn fun trivia about Friends and sing along to the theme song through karaoke. I’m constantly tempted to buy special edition Friends magazines at the grocery store, but this is better than adding yet another magazine to my collection – it’s a whole experience!
