Chatting with Canadian music legend Bif Naked was a rare opportunity. She’s a rockstar! Suffice to say, I love myself today – it’s so cool that we had a chance to sit down! We reminisced about growing up in the ’90s and explored her new music.
When I asked Bif about pursuing a career in music instead of comedy, she mentioned her comedian friend Bee Bertrand. Did you know she has a hidden track on his comedy album?!
Bif loves being whimsical as a songwriter. She was quick to praise Canadian icon Jann Arden for her ability to seamlessly make music and tell jokes. Bif, born Beth Torbert, also joked that her mom has the same sense of humour as Rose (Betty White) on Golden Girls. They could be twins from Minnesota.
Her latest single Lift Me Up has a nice optimistic message. “We’re all still yearning from a place of hope, we’re all still yearning for that feeling of safety. I think this song captures that feeling.”
“Just like anybody else, I’m still yearning for that one person that is going to make me feel like I can be safe to be myself.”
Bif Naked
This interview featured my first-ever audience question on Hot On The Street! My friend Sawyer wanted to know which song gives Bif the most pride and Bif quickly named Lucky. “I believed in the song so much. There are certain songs that when I’m writing them, I get tears in my eyes. It’s so personal to everybody why they love the song.”
I’ll admit I had to Google some of her pop culture references, but what better way to do a deep dive on music history? I mentioned how my old iTunes music library preserved my listening history, including my favourite Bif Naked song, Tango Shoes. Our conversation reminded me of my Q&A with Cam Gordon about his book, Track Changes: The Origin Story of Canadian Music on the Internet (1990-2010).
Bif’s boxer-inspired album art for Champion also reminded me of Bryan Adams’ album Roll With The Punches. The Bryan Adams concert in Toronto was incredible and I took home a mini boxing glove from his merch!
Bif loves touring and performing every summer. She’s also busy planning her next album and book. She said, “I feel like a really different person” since releasing her memoir I, Bificus in 2016 and she’s eager to share more. The sky’s the limit for Bif Naked and perhaps there’s a Bratz doll in her future!
