Feature Your Customers Like Target

Sarah Prince Gilmore Girls Target Style

Target featured me on their website! It’s exciting on a personal level and proves how easy it is to surprise and delight your customers in a mutually beneficial way. If you work in marketing, it’s so easy to make someone’s day! Let me tell you what happened.

I recently met Scott Patterson from Gilmore Girls at a Comicon photo op. Before I shared it on Instagram, I wanted to create a carousel post because that performs better. I took a quick photo in my kitchen wearing my Gilmore Girls t-shirt from Target with my Gilmore Girls mug from the WB gift shop. Then, I posted the photos together and I was happy with the engagement.

I was totally surprised when I woke up to a comment from Target asking if they could share my photo! Of course I said yes and then I started refreshing their website. Target has a dedicated gallery of UGC content and I’m thrilled to be included.

Target’s team has no idea how I made that picture happen. There are no Target stores in Canada!

First, I flew to LA in May 2022 where I went on the WB Studio Tour. I joined my mom on the Gilmore Girls set for an epic Mother’s Day. Then, I went to Chicago where I saw Target’s graphic t-shirts, but they didn’t have the Gilmore Girls t-shirt in my size. Finally, I found the Gilmore Girls t-shirt while on vacation in Miami in February and had to have it. When I got back, I filmed a Target haul video featuring my new t-shirt and bought a ticket to meet Scott Patterson, owner of Luke’s Diner!

The #TargetStyle website is effective because it feels good to be valued as a customer and get exposure, plus it doesn’t cost anything for Target to feature shoppers while promoting popular items. You get to see lifestyle photos of real customers using products you can buy right now in an authentic way. You could scan #TargetStyle posts manually on Instagram or go to the official site for a curated experience. I wish my post on the #TargetStyle site linked to my Instagram profile, but I understand that they ultimately want to drive e-commerce traffic that will generate sales.

I’m not the only one who loves shopping sprees at Target. The @TargetStyle Instagram account has 2.3 million followers and their main account has 5 million followers! Fast Company also wrote a new article about Target’s Gen Z appeal.
