Emily In Paris has been a highlight of the holiday break for the last 3 years. It’s a glamorous show about working in fashion PR from the creator of Sex and the City. Who doesn’t want to escape to Paris every December?
I love Emily in Paris, but the first season made me feel insecure and I’d like to share some advice from a coworker. I said to her, “Why does this 25-year-old girl sound smarter than me? She always makes it seem like she came up with brilliant ideas on the spot.” My work friend said, “you just have to prepare more. You’ll still need to improvise sometimes, but you have to prepare.”
By the time the second season was released, I felt more confident because I practiced everything. It didn’t matter if it was a presentation for 3 people or 30 people. If you want to look better, you can put makeup on, but if you want to sound better, you have to practice. I’ll never look like Lily Collins, but at least I can sound like her!
A team of writers prepare dialog about business, medicine and the law for TV, but I can’t help feeling insecure when I’m in similar situations at work. Many of us are searching for the right words under pressure and that’s ok to admit. I don’t think checking Merriam-Webster’s word of the day is the ultimate solution because it really comes down to practice!
In season three, Emily’s romantic life was a bigger focus than her career. However, her spur of the moment ideas in client meetings caused some conflict at work. Emily In Paris ended with a huge cliffhanger, so I’m excited to see what’s next for her personally and professionally. I’m thrilled with how my story is performing on Instagram because it is resonating with many young professionals.
