Concert Review: lovelytheband

Are you sure the guys from lovelytheband aren’t Canadian? They seem so humble, laidback and appreciative of their fans. They could blend in with Canadian artists for sure. I hear they like poutine.

Vocalist Mitchy Collins just broke his arm and he led a major show last night like it was no big deal. Sure, he drank some vodka to ease the pain, but nobody cared. In fact, the crowd chanted for him to chug it. “Pain is like heartbreak, you’ve got to drink your way through it,” he said.

Lovelytheband seemed to enjoy performing in Toronto as much as their fans loved watching them. “It’s Thursday night, but you’re giving us Friday night energy.” Mitchy said the band spent the afternoon on a racetrack, but playing music was even more exciting. When he congratulated the Raptors on winning the championship, he announced, “I was rooting for you since day one!”

The guys played all their hits, but the crowd really went wild when they covered Mr. Brightside by The Killers! It was electric and I’ve never heard that song live before, so it was special.

Mitchy picked up a few lucky fans’ phones at the front and filmed rare footage for them. They loved it! Would you rather shake your favourite artist’s hand or have them record memories on your phone? Last night, some fans experienced both!

I stood so close to the stage that some of my iPhone pictures and videos came out better than those from my camera with a 40x zoom, which says a lot! In fact, I was so close I could see the musicians clearly without my glasses, but I kept them on anyway. That’s the intimate experience at the Mod Club! I had never been there before and I really enjoyed it.

Before ending the show with broken, Mitchy gave a short speech about the importance of mental health. He encourages you to check on your friends because you don’t know what they’re going through. Mitchy wants their shows to be a safe space where you can be yourself and let loose.

Lovelytheband’s first Toronto show was at the Velvet Underground and their next tour will be at a bigger venue. I can’t wait! Opening act Twin XL said this was their first time in Canada and I’m sure they’ll be back too.

Note to self: if you ever get the chance to interview lovelytheband, don’t make a silly pun about anything being “lovely” because they’re tired of hearing it!

maybe, i’m afraid
