A&W Wants You To Skip The Ad

[youtuber youtube=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_n4QlBMbQY’]

When all you want to do is watch a music video, pesky ads can spoil the fun. Fast food chain A&W recognizes your pain and created an ad that communicates the key message in the first 5 seconds. After that, there’s not much to see—viewers simply watch an A&W spokesman eat a burger outside in the middle of the street.

I have never purchased anything at A&W and I can’t say this ad tempted me, but as as a marketer, I found the ad clever. They know you have a short attention span so they cut to the chase while trying to appear cool and modern. This won’t be the last smart spot I discover via pre-roll, but it is the first that encouraged me to skip it and I commend A&W for their creativity.

If you’re craving a burger now, find an A&W near you.

IKEA Grabs Life By The Catalogue

IKEA is known for creating innovative experiences for shoppers and their latest attempt is no exception. They’re jumping on the branded vending machine bandwagon (something we’ve seen brands like Essie do before) and offering a contest that’s powered by Twitter to promote the latest edition of their catalogue.

The vending machine is going on tour across Canada until the end of the month. When you tweet a PIN displayed on the vending machine, you will instantly win a prize such as a gift card, restaurant voucher or toy. One shopper tweeted a photo of the stuffed bear she received, which makes me curious to learn what else is inside the vending machine. It sounds like simple instructions for anyone with a Twitter account. The designated hashtag #GrabLifeByTheCatalogue is kind of long, but it clearly communicates the purpose of the campaign.

Perez Hilton Will Star In Full House The Musical!

Hot On The Street - Perez Hilton - Full House The Musical

After catching up on G-rated entertainment on Netflix by watching old episodes of Full House, it’s exciting to announce that celebrity blogger Perez Hilton will star in Full House The Musical!

The show will debut in Toronto at the Randolph Theatre in August. Perez loves spending time in Toronto and he especially admires how we celebrate theatre as a city. In a phone interview, Perez noted that Toronto’s passion for theatre makes our culture distinctly different from Los Angeles, where people see more movies than stage shows.

Considering how much time he spends online, it’s unsurprising that Perez landed this opportunity through social media. When he saw a friend in the entertainment industry post about the show, he immediately commented that he wanted to get involved. “I even joked that I would be Mary-Kate and Ashley,” he recalled. “Then Tobly, one of the creators, saw my comment and asked my friend if I was serious and I said, ‘Yes, I’m very serious,’ so then we set up a meeting.” Perez sent the creators footage of him singing to convince them that the Tisch School of the Arts graduate was talented enough to play Danny Tanner.

Instagram Inspiration: Happy New Year

Many top brands were eager to help consumers ring in the new year. Overall, I noticed that brands posted more GIFs and short videos this year, which signals progress. Last year’s round up included only three posts and this year’s list includes three categories to help marketers with content development on Instagram.

I hope you’ll bookmark this for future reference and maybe even print it in colour to discuss at your next brainstorm meeting!

Inspiration for Small Businesses

While evaluating posts in my feed, I looked for simple posts that small business owners can learn from and treat as templates for future holiday posts. With the right stock photo and some text overlay in a program like Adobe Photoshop, a post that looks like this one from Aroma is fairly easy to create.
