Movie Review: Hello, My Name Is Doris

hello-my-name-is-doris

When iTunes featured Hello, My Name Is Doris as their movie of the week, I immediately removed it from my wish list and rented it. Now that the Gilmore Girls revival is behind us, I had a chance to sit down and enjoy watching the movie this weekend.

Leading lady Sally Field is believable as a kooky data entry clerk in an advertising agency. I’m all about watching movies and TV shows that portray the media industry! As soon as she meets John (Max Greenfield), the new art director, she falls in love with him despite their age difference. I can’t blame her. I mean, have you seen him?

Book Review: Hungry Heart

jennifer-weiner-hungry-heart

In her opening letter, Jennifer shares her wish that this book will help her become more relatable to readers. She immediately accomplishes that goal on the first page of the first story when she describes her outfit that includes UGG boots. Jennifer Weiner is anything but basic though. She’s a talented, opinionated and friendly author who has overcome personal issues and handled negative reviews.

Jennifer was a gifted student and skipped a grade. It was upsetting to read about how when her dad got mad, he sometimes tore up her books. Of course, she has always been an avid reader. Her mother and Nanna love telling a story about how Jennifer lost her shoes at camp, but never lost a book.

In high school, I did a presentation for my media class (i.e. my favourite class) about alternative music and I spent lots of time trying to find an image of One Tree Hill’s Peyton Sawyer wearing a Tegan and Sara t-shirt. I don’t remember if that’s the show that introduced me to them, but regardless of how I discovered the Canadian twins, I’m glad I did.

I was relieved when I was finally able to buy a ticket to see them live in Toronto. Massey Hall turned out to be an incredible venue and I felt like I had the best seat in the house (on the aisle, in the third row of the first balcony). I swear I had a better view than when I’ve had floor seats at the Air Canada Centre.

A Vision In White

white-cashmere-collection-2016

My Instagram feed has been filled with runway shots taken around the world, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to watch a live fashion show in Toronto. The White Cashmere Collection is based on an extraordinary concept: raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation while showcasing how Canadian designers can create couture using bathroom tissue. The team at Kruger Products and their partners executed it seamlessly and it was such a fun way to spend a weekday morning.

Dan Levy Launches Gap X GQ Collection

Sarah Prince and Dan Levy

Once I became a fan of the hosts of MTV’s The Hills: After Show, there was no going back. Dan Levy and Jessi Cruickshank now work for CBC and they’re both integral members of Toronto’s cultural scene.

When I heard that Dan was going to host a menswear launch party at the Gap store on Bloor St., I immediately RSVP’d. Once there, he recognized me from his eyewear party at Jonathan and Olivia, so it wasn’t awkward. He told me that he’s hosted this event 3 years in a row and he’s been working towards it ever since he worked for Gap as a salesman before he was famous.
