These Logo Boots Don’t Spark Joy

When I look at my closet, one pair of boots stands out: brown Coach boots. These boots stand out because they’re covered in logos and make me feel like a walking advertisement.

To be clear, I have no problem with Coach as a brand. Two of my favourite purses are from Coach, but they are more sophisticated looking – they’re leather and the logo is very subtle. Coach incorporated the logo discreetly, so sometimes people ask me where I bought the purses. That’s what makes them classic accessories.

I could talk about why it’s important to reflect on which brands you support based on their business practices, but I don’t want to get political. The bottom line is that if you blatantly wear logos, you’re sending a message about your style. The brands you publicly support affect your personal brand. Coach happens to be a popular luxurious brand, but if you wear too many logos, you risk looking mainstream.

I was inspired to write this post because when I look at those boots, I feel like they belong in a satirical BuzzFeed listicle about the early 2000s. Even if someone showed me an article that said logos are in now, I don’t really care. That’s not my thing.

However, I’m sort of conflicted. I’m hesitant to donate them because they still fit and they’re cozy inside, but I rarely feel comfortable wearing them in public. For example, if I would only wear them once a month to the salon and winter only lasts a few months, is it worth it? Should I take the Marie Kondo approach and say these boots don’t spark joy, so let’s get rid of them?
