Amanda Goetz On Ambition, Toxic Grit & Women In Hollywood

Amanda Goetz is a marketing executive turned entrepreneur and one of my favourite people to follow. I’m excited to celebrate her book launch and share my conversation with the queen of LinkedIn!

Her debut book Toxic Grit: How to have it all and (actually) love what you have will be released on October 21. I felt compelled to point out that’s Kim Kardashian’s birthday! Then Amanda mentioned she’ll fulfill her goal of becoming a published author before turning 40. And Whitney Port from MTV’s The Hills endorsed Toxic Grit. That’s the show that inspired me to launch a blog!

Amanda’s definitely ready to advise Hollywood on how to portray ambitious women without being cringeworthy. Let’s stop confining women in binary constructs and start sharing more nuanced representations that actually reflect female audiences!

Focusing is more important than multitasking and Amanda reveals how reality TV fits into her schedule: “I am a believer in giving 100% to the thing that’s in front of me… If I’m on the couch watching Love Island, I am 100% on the couch watching Love Island.” That was my favourite part of our conversation!

I talked to the former CMO of The Knot in the middle of wedding season, so I had to ask her for advice for engaged couples. Amanda said “planning a wedding is like training wheels for your marriage”. If you can figure out how to handle your families and finances, then you’ll set yourselves up for long-term success.

Amanda has a weekly finance meeting with her partner, which includes discussions about their wedding budget. She’s clearly selective about what’s worth the investment like a personal trainer or quarterly facial, whereas upgrading her Honda is a lower priority.

Publishing Toxic Grit is a huge testament to Amanda’s success. She used to lead marketing for the #1 wedding resource and now she’s a massive resource independently. Amanda Goetz has clever ways of sharing tips, including a few unexpected cooking analogies! Her advice: “In the world of AI, knowing yourself and knowing your stories and owning your stories is a superpower.”
