Once I realized that the set list significantly impacts how much I like a concert, Avril Lavigne became the obvious choice for my next show. Seeing Simple Plan as the opening act sealed the deal.
By the end of Simple Plan’s set, I felt like I already got my money’s worth. I relived the 2000s with so many songs that fit perfectly in playlists and soundtracks. I didn’t know I needed to see Simple Plan live, but every millennial must go.
My interview with Kelsie Watts has been top of mind because her covers went viral and Simple Plan nailed it! From Stacy’s Mom to All Star and Mr. Brightside, they knew exactly what Avril’s fans wanted to hear.
I have great memories of seeing Avril Lavigne at Scotiabank Arena. She was one of my first concerts in middle school. It overlapped with the grand opening of Vaughan Mills, but of course her concert was more important. Then I saw her again with free tickets from MuchMusic. I had a blast, so I tried to recreate that experience by sitting in the 100s. Another good decision.
Avril started with the song Girlfriend for which I could produce a list of guys’ names that come to mind. The show had a solid start and never waned. I loved every minute and my only negative comment would be about Avril’s hair.
When Avril became a Canadian rockstar, she had straight brown hair and everyone loved her. Avril became known for graphic tees, especially the one with Home Hardware. I laughed when she said “orange is one of my favourite colours right now.” Avril looks amazing overall and she doesn’t need so many hair extensions.
The sold out crowd wanted to see the laidback star we’ve adored since she released Complicated and Sk8er Boi in 2002. “How bougie of me, I have white wine here. Cheers to never growing up!” She said with self-deprecating humour.
I felt like she was surprised by her Toronto fans’ support, but she really is a national treasure, so of course we all showed up. A couple fans were lucky to join her onstage, snap photos and receive autographed skateboards.
Attending The Greatest Hits Tour was the best decision I’ve made in a long time and it was my favourite recent concert. To top it off, I had a post-show chat with Avril’s mom! Judy Lavigne was only a few seats away. It was great to meet her, but I started rambling and I meant to say that I thought her daughter was a better performer than Madonna!
