Behind The Band With Jesse Gold

Jesse Gold

Jesse Gold is a Toronto-based musician known for the hit song One In A Million, which was streamed over 1 million times! It’s been over 15 years since we went to elementary school together and it’s amazing to see his success.

Thanks for doing an interview for Hot On The Street! What is your favourite street in Toronto?

Rosedale Valley Road for sure. I feel like if you’ve seen it, I don’t even need to explain. It’s a beautiful, winding road through the forest in the middle of the city. I’ve always loved it. Daniel Caesar filmed his Freudian visual on it!

We went to elementary school together back in the day. What is your favourite throwback song from the early 2000s?

7 Days by Craig David – one of my favourite songs of all time.

Name a Canadian musician who you’d love to tour with!

I’d love to tour with Loony. I’m just a big fan.

What was it like to sing the national anthem at a Blue Jays game?

It was really fun! Hard not to get goosebumps when that many people start to cheer at the end. And my mom was there, so that was nice!

I like how you share your sense of humour with funny tweets about your life. How do you approach social media as a musician?

Well, thank ya! It’s really important to me that my social media presence is well-rounded. I want content to look official and premeditated without feeling robotic. So as of lately, I’ve made an effort to diversify my content and inject as much personality as possible into everything I post. I definitely look at Twitter and TikTok as a more carefree space to play.

As a songwriter, you have a way with words and coming up with creative ideas! What advice do you have if someone gets writer’s block?

I’d give the same advice as I would to someone who is feeling anxious – that it’s okay, and to try not to judge yourself. At least that’s what I tell myself. Writer’s block is natural, and you got to ride that drought with the same respect and openness you would a creative wave.

How do you discover new music and organize your music?

I usually listen up until the chorus of every song on New Music Friday – just to see what’s going on. I follow artists I really love, so I’m fed any new music they make. My brother sends me songs he thinks I’ll like and he’s usually right. And then in terms of organizing, I listen to all of my music from the personal playlists I’ve made. Playlists by mood, genre, “best of” playlists for certain artists etc.

Congratulations on being selected for the 2021/2022 Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class program! What would you wear to your next awards show?

I’m debating between a “Dumb & Dumber” orange tux and top hat or just a plain black suit. On the fence. I’ll let you know.

Jesse Gold has a new single called Song In My Head out now!
