When I anticipated eating a special brunch at World MasterCard Fashion Week inside the tent, I knew the food would be better than quick service fare, but Flare and Metro’s chefs exceeded my expectations. As soon as Flare’s editor-in-chief Cameron Williamson humbly introduced himself at the entrance, I knew I was in for a treat. Soon we were offered glasses of sparkling water and then escorted to the beautifully decorated main room, where a long candlelit table extended down the runway.
It was the kind of event where everyone shared my enthusiasm for Texture by Next Issue and that made me happy. We all enjoyed a delicious four course meal, which included a beet salad, mushroom pasta, fish and dessert, and each course was introduced by a different chef and model.
Seated around the table was the who’s who of Canadian media and I fangirled a bit. I finally had a chance to meet my favourite local writer Jen Kirsch in person (she promised me in an email a long time ago that this day would eventually come and she was right!), but more importantly, I had a chance to chat with HELLO Canada’s editor-in-chief Alison Eastwood and I was seated next to group publisher Melissa Ahlstrand.
After an afternoon of powering through some magazines on my iPad, it was time to go back to the tent for two shows: Rachel Sin and Hong Kiyoung. Rachel’s was my favourite of the two and it was fun to meet her backstage after the show. Most of her models had intricate braids, which made me think about how I might style my hair when the warmer months return. Meanwhile, Hong Kiyoung’s collection was fresh and practical. It included a lot of beige, which reminded me of a beige bomber jacket I own that I didn’t wear this summer. Next year! When all of his models came back at the end in a uniform look of black, red and white sweatshirts, I realized that sweatshirts could make a major comeback, which works for me.
