Aside from the Oscars and Super Bowl, Sunday night doesn’t usually imply appointment viewing. Last night was an exception. I found myself flipping back and forth all night between the American Music Awards on CTV/ABC, Canada’s Smartest Person on CBC and Kourtney & Khloe Take the Hamptons on E! I’m one episode behind on The Good Wife, but I’ll fix that soon with Rogers on Demand.
Kourtney & Khloe Take the Hamptons
I wonder how many other dads leave hundreds of dollars worth of gifts for their kids and partners on their way to rehab. In the last episode, Scott went to rehab for five days, Kourtney’s therapist flew to New York for a surprise counselling session and Khloe celebrated her 30th birthday.
It looked like Khloe had a fun birthday bash and an even better surprise party, where French Montana gave her a Jeep. It’s a shame that Khloe’s anxiety about her age and relationship with Lamar interfered with her having a good time with friends.
Overall, it was a juicy drama-filled episode that was satisfying, yet somewhat difficult to watch given the sensitive subject matter about Scott’s behaviour and Kourtney’s health.
Canada’s Smartest Person
I admittedly didn’t watch every episode of Canada’s Smartest Person, but I tuned in regularly and followed along online. Host Jessi Cruickshank maintained her bold slash cute style throughout the season and shared her finale outfit details on her new blog.
When it came time for the season finale, I was rooting for Daryl Dillman because he was a champion in episode six, for which I was part of the audience. I wasn’t familiar with the other finalists and the one woman eligible to win the top prize was disqualified early on, so I lost interest in the season finale around 8:30 after Daryl was dismissed. Watching TV then became more about entertainment and less about managing a juggling act. For the record, Braden Lauer was crowned Canada’s Smartest Person. Congratulations!
Seven #AMA nominations ain’t no thang for the fiercely
fabulous @KatyPerry. Go rock 'em, girl! pic.twitter.com/Vf8NADvqiC— COVERGIRL (@COVERGIRL) November 24, 2014
American Music Awards
While I scrolled through live tweets, I noticed how brands engaged on Twitter, especially brands affiliated with award-winning singers. Diet Coke shared their support for Taylor and CoverGirl showed some love for Katy. Special hashtags were introduced throughout the broadcast like #CongratsTaylor and #BangBangAMAs, but they were displayed onscreen for such a short time that they were too easy to forget.
My awards show commentary covers three time periods: before, during and after Kourtney & Khloe Take the Hamptons aired.
I enjoyed the chance to see a live performance of Imagine Dragons’ I Bet My Life song, which has been playing in heavy rotation on my iPhone. Next, Orange Is The New Black star Taylor Schilling took the stage to present the award for Favourite Male Artist – Pop/Rock to Sam Smith. Despite this being an unpopular opinion, I will confess that I strongly dislike Sam Smith. His songs irritate me and I can’t wait until someone else replaces him on Top 40 radio stations.
We're cheering to @taylorswift13's impressive #AMAs win with an "ice-cold” Diet Coke. #GetATaste

Keeping up with the Kardashians meant missing Katy Perry’s big win as Favourite Female Artist – Pop/Rock. Meanwhile, my Twitter friends joked about being too old to be familiar with the boy band 5 Seconds of Summer. The Kardashian saga ended just in time to catch Diana Ross honouring Taylor Swift with the first Dick Clark Award for Excellence. The montage of Taylor’s career reiterated why she’s a positive role model. I can’t wait to see her perform in Toronto next fall. I liked how Taylor thanked fans for buying over one million copies of 1989 and reminded viewers about how listening to a full album affects your listening experience.
If you watched any of the above shows, I’d love to hear which moments you think were highlights!
