Movie Review: Iris

Iris Apfel

Style icon Iris Apfel initially entered my radar as a blogger when I interviewed a former Sears employee for my Behind the Brand series. The new documentary Iris portrays her lifestyle as a collector of couture and costume jewellery.

With support from her husband Carl, Iris fills her apartments (and a storage locker) with pieces from around the world that reflect her eclectic yet stylish taste. Their residences look clean, but purposefully cluttered. In addition to garments and accessories, they also have a large collection of books. Iris prides herself on knowing what’s happening in economics and politics. She recognizes how fashion trends reflect historical events and has lived long enough to confirm that eventually everything becomes trendy once again.

Brands Prank Consumers

You never know what to expect from leading brands on April Fool’s Day. When I sourced content for this roundup, the images and videos I saw ranged from silly to strategic. BMW’s giveaway was probably the most expensive to execute, although Honda’s SUV customizations weren’t cheap either. Kenneth Cole is a sophisticated brand, but they took a risk and went the immature route to target young animal lovers. The videos are ranked in order of personal preference, which is the same as their order based on # of YouTube views. Enjoy!

SUBWAY Style

Hungry for haute couture? Look no further than SUBWAY’s collaboration with Canadian designer Sunny Fong, owner of Vawk, who launched a capsule collection inspired by food at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto.

We are always looking at new ways to be a part of pop culture and share our healthy living message,” said Kathleen Bell, Director of National Marketing, SUBWAY Restaurants Canada.

Fashion Week presented an opportunity for SUBWAY to make a bold statement with stunning outfits inspired by their menu. This marked the first time SUBWAY participated in the festivities. Six outfits were seen on the runway, plus two other designs were displayed in the tent with materials from SUBWAY packaging. Backstage, models were fed SUBWAY sandwiches to help energize them — what a filling snack!

It’s Throwback Thursday and that calls for a spotlight on a campaign from a classic brand: Converse. I’ve never doodled on my Converse, but I love to wear them. I suspect they’ll be a wardrobe staple indefinitely.

Every owner of Converse sneakers has the option to personalize their footwear to reflect their personality and interests. Converse is celebrating consumers’ flare for customizing sneakers with their latest Made By You campaign.

Instagram Inspiration: Happy New Year

Many top brands were eager to help consumers ring in the new year. Overall, I noticed that brands posted more GIFs and short videos this year, which signals progress. Last year’s round up included only three posts and this year’s list includes three categories to help marketers with content development on Instagram.

I hope you’ll bookmark this for future reference and maybe even print it in colour to discuss at your next brainstorm meeting!

Inspiration for Small Businesses

While evaluating posts in my feed, I looked for simple posts that small business owners can learn from and treat as templates for future holiday posts. With the right stock photo and some text overlay in a program like Adobe Photoshop, a post that looks like this one from Aroma is fairly easy to create.
