Movie Review: The Dressmaker

The Dressmaker - Kate Winslet

Imagine a small town in Australia. It’s 1951. A young woman returns home with her Singer sewing machine and a sophisticated attitude that all her old friends lack. It’s been several years since she’s been home and she’s concerned that the whole town thinks she’s cursed, but she can’t fully explain why. Soon enough, it is revealed that she was sent off to boarding school because the town suspected she murdered a young boy.

When a woman who looks like Kate Winslet shows up out of the blue, everyone takes notice. As a clothing designer, Myrtle AKA Tilly (Kate Winslet) has beautiful taste in fashion and she distracts all the football players when she arrives at a game looking like a knockout in a red dress. Teddy (Liam Hemsworth), one of the football players, quickly becomes Tilly’s love interest and he’s a charming one at that.

Career Lessons From Mia Pearson

Hot On The Street - Women of Influence - Mia Pearson and Sarah Prince

On Tuesday night, professional women gathered at One King West to hear Mia Pearson, co-founder of communications agency North Strategic, speak at a Women of Influence event. From cocktails at the beginning to the keynote speech to the networking session, the two-hour-long event was run very efficiently. After working in leadership positions at a few of the country’s most reputable agencies, Mia had a lot of advice on entrepreneurship to dispense, which she eloquently shared with the group.

1) Find a niche where you can excel, ensure that you have something valuable to offer and then become the best in your field.

One of Mia’s first managers discouraged her from specializing in tech PR, but she disagreed with his advice because she recognized that specializing could lead to huge career opportunities. In the end, she co-founded High Road Communications, an agency that specializes in tech PR and Omnicom eventually acquired it. Whether you’re an entrepreneur or an intrapreneur, Mia said you should always look for growth opportunities. She emphasized that big ideas can come from any level, reminding the audience that you don’t need to be the co-founder to think big. If you work hard within your niche, then you can become famous for your work.

Concert Review: Celine Dion

Hot On The Street - Sarah Prince - Celine Dion

There’s nowhere I’d rather spend the night before my birthday than the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. In 2010, I saw Cher and Chelsea Handler – two amazing shows in one night! This year, I went to see Celine Dion and it was a good decision because her latest show is phenomenal.

Hotspot: Canada’s Wonderland

Hot On The Street - Canada's Wonderland - Backlot Stunt Coaster - Sarah Prince

I covered most of Toronto’s tourist attractions while growing up in the city, but it’s fun to return to your favourite spots with a new perspective as an adult. I recently went to Canada’s Wonderland to experience the thrill of riding roller coasters and escape city life for the day.

My favourite ride is definitely The Fly. It’s slower than the Backlot Stunt Coaster, which I also liked, but fast enough to feel like a mini adventure. Thunder Run comes at a close second, while the wooden ride Wild Beast was too shaky for me. Next time, I’d love to ride in a log on Timberwolf Falls.

Hot On The Street - Canada's Wonderland - Drop Tower - Sarah Prince

The highlight of my day at Wonderland was crossing something off my bucket list: riding Drop Tower, formerly known as Drop Zone. The short line didn’t give me much time to think about what I was about to do. I went on it with an open mind. When we got to the top, I had a few seconds to enjoy an incredible view of the park and the surrounding area in Vaughan. After that, we quickly plunged back to the bottom and then it was over. I did it! And I was proud of conquering my fear.

Beyond the rides, I noticed how many food franchises have opened at Wonderland since my last visit. In addition to Pizza Pizza, they now have SUBWAY, Starbucks and Manchu Wok to name a few. Thankfully their website clearly lists peanut-free dining options so I knew where I could safely eat upon arrival.

Hot On The Street - Canada's Wonderland - The Rage - Sarah Prince

Going to Wonderland was a lot of fun, but I don’t think I’ll necessarily return next summer. Now that I’ve been to Las Vegas a few times, I prefer the thrill of gambling. It’s a different kind of risk with a different kind of reward, but if you’re smart with your bets then you can make your money last for awhile.

That said, Wonderland is an awesome place to take kids and I had a lot of fun when I used to have a season pass. If nothing else, Wonderland is a great place to enjoy Toronto’s summer weather where you can be free to channel your inner child. No matter how hard they try though, they can never compete with Disney World.

Play Review: Full House The Musical

Hot On The Street - Perez Hilton and Sarah Prince

There’s one main incentive to see Full House The Musical and that’s Perez Hilton. After talking to him in June, I was excited to see him on stage at the Randolph Theatre.

“I wear high-waisted jeans and I want you to meet my unconventional family,” Perez sings, as Danny Tanner, introducing the show. The cast activates the hug zone in the opening number when they joyously approach audience members in the first few rows. If you fall in love with the characters, then it’s not as weird as it sounds.
