Greta Gerwig has become a powerhouse in Hollywood. Selena Fragassi unpacks everything you need to know about the media mogul in her new book, Greta: The Work, Life, and Style of Greta Gerwig.
The book picks up where Greta Gerwig’s Wikipedia page leaves off. It fills in the blanks with her biography, accomplishments and perspectives. Plus, it’s illustrated with tons of movie stills, photo shoots and award show highlights.
Growing up, passively participating in hobbies wasn’t her thing. Greta was all in on theatre, ballet and reading. Hiding books under her bed as a kid clearly helped her write popular scripts. Though her parents didn’t buy her any Barbie dolls, her friends shared their hand me downs to kickstart her collection years before she wrote and directed the blockbuster Barbie movie.
When Selena describes Greta’s excitement about moving to New York, I love how she mentions the name of the video store where Greta frequently rented movies. I have great memories of renting movies as well. And I concur that some of them influenced my career choices, similar to how Greta chose to pursue a career as a filmmaker.
What’s more, Greta met Kate McKinnon when they were classmates at Columbia University and they briefly lived together! I love stories like that about how major stars have been friends since the early aughts.
Selena comments that “New York gave [Greta] endless opportunities for innocent voyeurism.” People watching can be so impactful for creatives! “I’m interested in other people. It’s one of the reasons I like living in New York City. I like seeing people, running into people. I wouldn’t do well alone in the woods.” That’s one of many memorable quotes that Selena pulls from to paint a portrait of Greta Gerwig.
Looking ahead, Selena confirms that Greta’s storytelling will focus on women. “I like writing about women because men don’t know what women do when they aren’t there,” Greta told Bust.
Selena effectively captures Greta’s filmography, but I think fans would like to see more about Greta’s personal life beyond childhood. It’s a quick read with room to elaborate more on what happens behind the scenes, such as her relationship with husband Noah Baumbach. This book leans into her work more than her life and style. Give readers what they really want!
Greta Gerwig fans will love learning more about her journey through the glossy pages in this collectible book that looks stunning on my shelves. You should see how perfect it looks next to my bottle of Britney Spears Curious perfume!
Greta: The Work, Life, and Style of Greta Gerwig by Selena Fragassi will be released on June 10, 2025.
