Nashville singer-songwriter Kelsie Watts needs to be on your radar! First, she launched her career on The Voice with Kelly Clarkson. Then she went viral on TikTok with her rendition of Celine Dion’s song The Power of Love. It was great to chat about her new song, social media and Canadian music.
Before Kelsie Watts became famous, she loved watching music videos on MTV. We talked about how the evolution of reality TV and social media led to where she is today. “I remember when I was a kid, you just played outside if you want to meet new people. Now you can just open it up and, my gosh, there’s an unlimited amount of people. You get to connect with people in different countries and other continents, so I think it’s definitely a positive thing.”
Before we gushed about how much we love Celine Dion, Kelsie revealed she’s always been a massive Justin Bieber fan and admires how Lauren Spencer Smith’s career has taken off!
“If a song has the longevity of 10, 20, 30 years, my gosh, I’d want to sing it all the time. So I think it’s really cool that so many artists are putting covers into their set because it’s like paying tribute to so many other artists and songs that have come before, that have made such a lasting impact.”
Kelsie wrote her new song After Midnight in Toronto with Liz Rodrigues and Craig McConnell. On the surface, it might seem like the lyrics are about putting on a mask like makeup and then revealing the real you. However, Kelsie said it goes “deeper than just skin and beauty”. She explained it’s more about saying “Hey, I’ve messed up in the past. This is really me. I’ve healed. And whenever you see all of this underneath this mask of who I am today, I’m still worthy of being loved, being accepted [and] being who I am.”
