Plus One (Movie Review)

Plus One (2019) is an amazing romantic comedy and if it fell under the radar, I highly recommend watching. Best friends Ben (Jack Quaid) and Alice (Maya Erskine) agree to navigate wedding season in their late twenties together while they are both single. As they travel to each wedding, they confront their past relationships and family history. More importantly, they explore their own feelings for each other.

Not only are the characters loveable and realistic, but it’s also the first time I’ve felt like the lead is the male version of me! Here are 5 similarities between me and Ben King in Plus One:

Ben King might seem to have things in common with me based on his name alone, but we’re just getting started. He works in tech and his best friend Alice jokes about him working at Radio Shack. His parents’ divorce made him seek perfection in relationships and repeatedly reject partners. When his dad remarries, the second wedding is on October 21, the same day as Kim Kardashian’s birthday. I think flowers are often a waste of money, but Ben has another theory. He dislikes giving flowers as romantic gifts because they’re guaranteed to wilt and fall apart and die. What kind of twisted gesture is that?

Overall, it’s a great movie. It’s a little weird watching characters spend time in a cemetery at night when there is not a funeral, but the scene progresses the plot. Loved Alice’s outfit choice for Ben’s dad’s wedding. Her brown and white polka dot dress definitely has Pretty Woman vibes. It was also fun to see Brianne Howey in something that was released before Ginny & Georgia.

Let’s normalize watching movies and shows on your own schedule!
