When I went to Urban Outfitters at Yonge and Eglinton, I immediately noticed the disposable cameras by the cash.
I have an old disposable camera on the bookshelves next to me because I consider it decorative art. I love collecting vintage tech – some are real devices and some are actually toys! One of my favourite souvenirs is a retro TV picture frame from Urban Outfitters in Washington, D.C.
Carrying my digital camera has led to lots of teasing, so why is it cool to buy a disposable camera that doesn’t have a zoom? In a world of instant gratification, how has a film camera that requires professional developing become popular? Wouldn’t it be cheaper and more sustainable to borrow and play with an old digital camera from a relative?
Even though it seems odd to sell these cameras at Urban Outfitters, everything old is new again! Just ask Kim Kardashian. As I was writing this, Kim hilariously announced a new bra while dressed like a sexy nerd in glasses next to a clunky desktop monitor. This isn’t the first time she’s used nostalgia and humour to sell a product. Remember when she brought back velour tracksuits and partnered with Paris Hilton to sell SKIMS?
If you feel like queuing up Stars are Blind, you might want to reach for an old iPod. Urban Outfitters has also started selling iPods and the internet has mixed reactions. To sum up, analog devices have a special appeal, but the price tags are questionable. Fast Company reported they’re so popular that they might have sold out! See below for a hot take from Bill Young, Head of Games at Twitch, inspired by The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Given the current silent walking trend, reselling iPods isn’t so absurd. Personally, I over analyze too much, so I don’t want more time alone with my thoughts. I love my walking playlist and want to get my Spotify minutes up to maximize my premium subscription ROI. That said, I understand the desire to unplug and escape the noise of everyday life while getting exercise and peace of mind! An iPod might be a good alternative if it feels like turning off notifications or going on airplane mode requires too much self-control.
Kim, Apple and Urban Outfitters have built successful businesses by understanding customers and trends. I was there the minute Urban Outfitters opened in London and replaced a Blockbuster store. I keep going back and telling myself it’s for research, then see what’s inside!
