You need a Roku if you don’t have a smart TV! I discovered Roku on LinkedIn. They seemed like a cool entertainment and tech company, so I kept them in the back of my mind. Prior to that, I was only familiar with Apple TV and had vaguely heard of other competitors.
Then I saw a sponsored post about Roku by one of my favourite local bloggers in December. This kept it top of mind and prompted me to look it up again. I realized that you need to plug it in via HDMI and our living room TV only has one HDMI port, so that seemed like an obstacle. Eventually I realized that I could get an HDMI splitter for only $15 on Amazon, so problem solved!
I wish I ordered it earlier, but I know exactly why it took me so long to arrive here. A couple years ago, I went to the Apple Store shortly after buying a new MacBook Pro. I spoke to a store employee and he convinced me to buy a dongle that would let me use USB and HDMI cords with my computer. He was really cute and offered a cheaper alternative to Apple TV, so I bought it immediately! (A hot guy who will save me money – who could resist that?) This led to 2 more years of pulling up a chair to connect my laptop to the TV every weekend to watch Netflix. It wasn’t a huge deal, but it was inconvenient.
With the Roku, I transformed our old TV into a smart TV for only $40! It was easy to set up and I won’t miss carrying my laptop. I love being able to pause from the couch without standing up. I’m currently watching Scandal from the beginning and the quality seems better too. I’ll definitely keep an eye on the free movies offered to Roku customers. I’ll probably sign up for Crave and Amazon Prime in the near future, so then I’ll get even more value! The Roku seems like a lifesaver during the pandemic and I’m so excited to use it.
