Play Review: Menopause The Musical

Las Vegas has something to offer for everyone, but if you’re looking for a show that’s tailored to an older audience, then consider going to see Menopause The Musical. If you visit with a mom, aunt, sister, friend or grandmother over the age of 40, then it’s worth buying tickets.

In fact, the show is such a hit that many hands went up when they took a poll at the beginning to learn how many audience members returned to see the show a second time. Twice would be too much for me, but if you can relate to the script and you can see it at a discounted price, then go for it.

Menopause The Musical is set in a department store, which is a stereotypically feminine setting, but it makes it easier for the stage managers to replace set pieces in between scenes. Likewise, the cast’s costume changes are very quick as well.

The characters have different backgrounds, so the show has mass appeal. There’s the actress who’s in denial that she’s in menopause and lies about her age, a forgetful businesswoman, a hippie who copes with insomnia and a bubbly housewife. One thing I noticed about the cast is that all four ladies play real women with real problems and they all have healthy looking bodies. They could star in Dove commercials.

Some of the choreography is too forced and silly, but the cast sure knows how to let loose while dancing to old disco and pop tunes. The crowd really loved the businesswoman’s performance inspired by Tina Turner. Many women also relished the chance to boogie on stage at the end of the show when the actors invited us to go up. In that sense, the show was definitely interactive, as two of the actors also stepped off the stage during the show to sing in the middle of the theatre.

Custom drinks sold in the theatre echo the show’s sense of humour with cocktail names ranging from the Mood Swing Martini to Not Enough Sex On The Beach. Menopause The Musical is lively, cheeky and entertaining, and the cast delivered a polished performance. It offers a good reason to visit Harrah’s, which is conveniently located across the street from the Mirage, my favourite hotel on the Strip.
