Taste of Toronto

Taste of Toronto Fruit

Toronto is filled with amazing restaurants, as well as many foodies and drink connoisseurs. That’s why this weekend’s Taste of Toronto was such a hit in the Six.

Scrolling through Instagram made me even more excited to attend, as my friends posted pics of highly photogenic and tasty treats. Once I looked at the restaurant menus, however, I realized that my choices were limited due to dietary restrictions. That didn’t stop me from having fun though!

To say there were samples galore would be an understatement. It was practically like a gourmet and outdoor version of Costco. I tried coconut water for the first time, which was refreshing and different. I also cheated on my diet by tasting new flavours of Kettle’s potato chips and I munched on lots of crackers and cheese with various dips.

I was pleased to discover a brand called La Dee Da, which makes gourmet sauces. My favourite sauce, which I bought to take home, is made with mushrooms, basil and white wine. It will be good with a side dish, such as rice or potatoes.

Maille cocktail

Inside the Maille booth, I chatted with Harry Lalousis, their mustard sommelier. He flew in all the way from London, so I’m glad we had a chance to talk shop. He emphasized that mustard is an ingredient you can cook with, not just a condiment.

In fact, you can make cocktails with mustard too! I haven’t liked apple juice since I was a kid, but somehow when it was mixed with lemon juice, vodka and and liquid canne sugar, I enjoyed it. What a unique way to sip your way through summer.

If you’re adventurous with what you eat, then the Taste of Toronto is a convenient way to discover new menu items. Despite the heat, I had fun walking around Fort York. I realize this might sound cheesy, but I also loved how the currency at Taste of Toronto was crowns. What can I say? I’m a sucker for all things royal.
