It’s hard to turn down free tickets, so when one of my former hotel packages included a voucher for a dinner and show at Planet Hollywood, how could I say no? In the end, I chose to eat at the Italian restaurant Lombardi’s and see Vegas! The Show.
The premise of Vegas! The Show is appealing because it’s a variety show that tells audiences about the history of Las Vegas. The show is bookended with narration by a janitor who makes funny quips about the characters you’ll find walking on Las Vegas Blvd, such as pushy promoters. The best parts of the show highlight the glitz and glamour present along the Strip throughout the decades, which includes classy restaurants and showgirls.
With your ticket, you get to hear music from old crooners like Frank Sinatra and Elvis plus Sonny and Cher. Of course, Vegas! The Show would be incomplete without a scene featuring a wedding chapel, which is where Elvis comes in.
The most recent celebrity impersonated is Elton John, when a musician plays Rocket Man on the piano. Clint Carvalho, ‘The Bird Man’, who performs interactive tricks with a parrot, taught his parrot about Lindsay Lohan, but their jokes about her substance abuse are unnecessary.
One of the most entertaining segments features Matt Plendl, a talented performer who appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson at 24 and masterfully played with hula-hoops. The Sandou Trio, who take gymnastics to the next level through incredible balancing acts and jumps, follows his act. Another favourite moment is when the dancers play jump rope using a long microphone cord.
All in all, Vegas! The Show is lively and engaging, and I’m glad I had a chance to see it for free. If you want to know more about Las Vegas’ past without picking up a book or resorting to Wikipedia, then this is the show for you, as it’s full of action.
