After catching up on G-rated entertainment on Netflix by watching old episodes of Full House, it’s exciting to announce that celebrity blogger Perez Hilton will star in Full House The Musical!
The show will debut in Toronto at the Randolph Theatre in August. Perez loves spending time in Toronto and he especially admires how we celebrate theatre as a city. In a phone interview, Perez noted that Toronto’s passion for theatre makes our culture distinctly different from Los Angeles, where people see more movies than stage shows.
Considering how much time he spends online, it’s unsurprising that Perez landed this opportunity through social media. When he saw a friend in the entertainment industry post about the show, he immediately commented that he wanted to get involved. “I even joked that I would be Mary-Kate and Ashley,” he recalled. “Then Tobly, one of the creators, saw my comment and asked my friend if I was serious and I said, ‘Yes, I’m very serious,’ so then we set up a meeting.” Perez sent the creators footage of him singing to convince them that the Tisch School of the Arts graduate was talented enough to play Danny Tanner.
Recognizing that he’s cast as an iconic parent from pop culture, it’s interesting to hear about his own approach to parenting. “With everything I do, it’s all about putting in the work, putting in the hours, being present. That’s one of the main reasons I moved to New York City two years ago. I’m very confident that living in Manhattan has enabled me to be a better parent.”
In New York, Perez has seen the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch fifteen times! It’s his all-time favourite musical. A starring role in Full House The Musical! is the gravy on top of his career as a media personality. “What’s great is that I still love my job very much, eleven years later, and I get to do cool things on the side like this.”
With opening night less than two months away, Perez was asked to pick a celebrity guest who he’d like to attend. Without hesitating, he named Bob Saget. “Not only are we lovingly lampooning this iconic vehicle we all know and love, but we’re also playfully poking fun at the actors that portrayed them as well and incorporating their lives into the show. If you know anything about Bob Saget and his stand-up and his everyday life, you’ll know that he’s filthy and he swears a lot so there will be some of that in the show for sure.” Perez added that all of the characters in Full House The Musical! are hilariously dysfunctional.
Michelle Tanner may not be my favourite character, but Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are my favourite stars to emerge from the series. Perez said he wasn’t surprised to learn they are uninterested in joining the new Fuller House show. However, he predicts they could have a “change of heart” and believes the twins owe it to their fans for one of them to do a cameo.
The show sounds even funnier than PerezHilton.com, so Full House The Musical! is a must-see this summer. Let’s prove Perez right and show him how much Torontonians like to see plays.
