December is a month of reflection. Publishers encourage readers to start making lists of resolutions. Employees carve out more time to spend with loved ones. There’s suddenly an increased pressure to not only shop but also think about our past and establish goals for the future.
As Jeanne Beker discusses in Globe Style Advisor, escaping concrete jungles for rustic destinations can do wonders. Evidently, the article inspired me more than I realized. It gave me the urge to relax in an unfamiliar Canadian city and eliminate other destinations that would allow me to kick back in a warmer climate. Shortly after reading her advice, I booked a flight to Edmonton, Alberta.
When the cab pulled up to Home2 Suites By Hilton, I knew I picked the right hotel. The flame of a campfire directly outside the main entrance immediately creates an inviting atmosphere for guests. Inside, the lobby reminded me of a Marriott hotel in London, ON where I stayed the night before graduation. I took a red eye flight, so the hotel was silent when I arrived. As a solo traveller, I greatly appreciated the hotel’s hospitality.
Shopping at West Edmonton Mall has been on my bucket list for a while. After walking around the shopping centre and seeing its attractions, I found it surprisingly underwhelming. Sure, it appears larger than life compared to other malls, but it’s essentially a combination of other tourist attractions I’ve seen.
However, I see why kids anxiously beg caregivers to take them to West Ed. Water slides, rides and animals are just a few steps away from well-known retailers. Looking around the mall that was dressed up for the holidays, I thought about Aventura Mall in Miami. I enjoyed going to the Disney Store there during December break and riding the mini train.
When retailers prioritize customer service, shopping is a delightful experience year round and now everything looks prettier. Store windows are brighter and the lyrics to holiday hits are recognizable, thus making shopping anywhere in Canada a good activity while on vacation.
On my way back home, I had a pleasant experience at Edmonton International Airport as well. I heard two musicians performing live music, saw candy and toys galore for young travellers and generally found that it helped end my trip on a positive note.
If you have yet to explore Western Canada, I recommend looking for deals on Expedia and adding it to your destination list. There’s no such thing as meeting too many polite Canadians who love to say “eh.”
