In high school, I did a presentation for my media class (i.e. my favourite class) about alternative music and I spent lots of time trying to find an image of One Tree Hill’s Peyton Sawyer wearing a Tegan and Sara t-shirt. I don’t remember if that’s the show that introduced me to them, but regardless of how I discovered the Canadian twins, I’m glad I did.
I was relieved when I was finally able to buy a ticket to see them live in Toronto. Massey Hall turned out to be an incredible venue and I felt like I had the best seat in the house (on the aisle, in the third row of the first balcony). I swear I had a better view than when I’ve had floor seats at the Air Canada Centre.
Tegan and Sara played for 1 hour and 40 minutes. Their set list made me want to dig deeper into their discography. While I waited for them to play Closer, I kept thinking of a performance I’ve seen on YouTube where Taylor Swift invited them to play it during her tour. Taylor Swift is literally the only person who could’ve made last night’s show better.

The show was phenomenal. Aside from a few lighting effects, it was simple and put the focus on their vocal talent. Oh, and Tegan and Sara’s commentary in between was funny. When they talked about how they’ve lived and worked in different places between the US and Canada, the crowd cheered for Portland, where they recorded their album The Con, and booed for Vancouver. They said people always told them artists need to move to Toronto to be successful and they clearly proved them wrong.
I’m already counting down until their next major release and therefore the next time I can see them again. Now I’ve seen all of my favourite artists live, so I guess all that’s left is discovering new music and going to more of their tours.
