Hotspot: Miraj Hammam Spa (Shangri-La)

My invitation for a facial at the Miraj Hammam Spa inside Toronto’s Shangri-La hotel could not have come at a better time, as I had a chance to exfoliate my skin a few days before a portrait session.

Time flies when you’re in a luxurious and relaxing environment being pampered by a professional esthetician. The reception area was quiet when I arrived on a weeknight and inside the atmosphere was even more tranquil. The overall interior design is kind of dark, so it might make you sleepy if you go in the morning or afternoon.

After changing into a robe, I visited the lounge area (known as the Babylon Room), where I went pre- and post-treatment. Inside, guests are offered snacks like banana chips and fruit, as well as a special chai tea. It’s a phone-free zone, so it’s very peaceful and guests who came in small groups kept conversations to a whisper.

I enjoyed the Caudalie Grand Facial ($170), which was customized to my skin type. Their website says this facial is a cult favourite and I can see why! The next day, my skin felt incredibly smooth and any minor discomfort I experienced was soon forgotten.

It was nice to relish lying down in silence in the treatment room, but sometimes I also asked my esthetician to explain what she was doing and describe the products she was using. I didn’t want to buy any of the recommended products without consulting my dermatologist first, but I sure was tempted!

The elegance of the entire hotel is irresistible, so this won’t be my last visit to the Shangri-La. I imagine I’ll be back soon to return to the spa or meet someone for drinks.
