It’s Throwback Thursday and that calls for a spotlight on a campaign from a classic brand: Converse. I’ve never doodled on my Converse, but I love to wear them. I suspect they’ll be a wardrobe staple indefinitely.

Every owner of Converse sneakers has the option to personalize their footwear to reflect their personality and interests. Converse is celebrating consumers’ flare for customizing sneakers with their latest Made By You campaign.

Anomaly helped Converse develop a campaign that focuses on pop culture and honours legends like Andy Warhol. According to Digiday, Converse executives want to promote self-expression among famous celebrities and ordinary consumers.

The campaign video chronicles a variety of Converse owners—some with store bought shoes in good condition and others with shoes they transformed with paint. The video’s message reminds me of The Imitation Game screenwriter Graham Moore’s acceptance speech at the Oscars. “Stay weird. Stay different,” he said. It seems Converse is promoting the same message about individuality and I think that’s what will make the campaign successful.
